Intern Development of ARC Controller | Contour Advanced Systems

Assignment:

Contour Advanced Systems has developed its own hardware over the past few months for controlling mobile industrial installations. This has resulted in ARC, a cost-effective controller that will replace traditional and expensive PLC systems. ARC is based on the STM32 platform and programmed in Rust. Although it already offers many functionalities, it currently lacks software support for important features such as Ethernet, RS-485, and MODBUS. Additionally, there is no desktop application for optimal control and monitoring of the ARC controller.

Assignment description:

The internship or graduation assignment is divided into two essential tasks:

1. Board Support Package (BSP) Development:Expand the functionalities through further development on a prototype of a Board Support Package. This package needs to be extended with device drivers for Ethernet, USB, and RS-485. The integration of the MODBUS protocol for controlling Ethernet and RS-485 is crucial here.
2. Desktop Application for ARC:Design a desktop application that communicates with the ARC via the previously mentioned USB connection using its own protocol. This application enables users to upload software to the controller and graphically display the status of the IO.

Bonus assignment:

In addition to these two main tasks, there is a bonus assignment related to implementing version control, such as Git, in industrial automation. Given the benefits of version control in software development, we aim to integrate this efficient practive into our working environment. Your expertise and advice on setting up a version control system are highly valuable to us.

Who are you?

• You have experience with programming languages such as Rust.
